Abstract: |
Design developments for roadway bridges based on new hybrid structures - Part 2: Cable stayed bridges. The development of cable stayed bridges which started in Germany after World War II was characterized by the preferred use of orthotropic steel decks for the stiffening girders. Despite the fact that the use of concrete decks would have been commendable because of the prevailing pressure forces acting in the stiffening girders of cable stayed bridges, cross-sections with concrete decks have rarely been built. The recent changes in the design rules for bridge decks described in chapter 2 (part 1) of this paper will also influence the further development of cable stayed bridges and underline the importance of concrete decks by which automatically more space will be created for advanced hybrid bridge designs. Some innovative possibilities of such hybrid structures for the stiffening girders of cable stayed bridges will be presented in this paper. |
