The tournament was originally scheduled from 12 June to 12 July 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement to 2021 while the name of the event was maintained as the tournament was intended to celebrate the 60th "birthday" of the European Championship competition. For this reason, the championship is not held in a single host country but in 11 (originally 13) host cities from different football associations from all over Europe.
