Chronology
1901 | The bridge is strengthened to be able to carry heavier train loads. |
---|---|
1911 | A pier and support are added in mid-span to relieve the cantilever truss which subsequently no longer acts as a cantilever. |
1914 | A flood takes out the nearby Needles Ferry. Planks are installed on the Red Rock Bridge to allow combined road / railroad traffic. The situation remains until the completion of the Trails Arch Bridge in 1916. |
1945 | The nearby Santa Fe Railroad Bridge is opened taking traffic from the Red Rock Bridge. |
21 May 1947 | After removal of the tracks and the pouring of a reinforced concrete deck, the bridge goes into service as a vehicular bridge and relieves the Trails Arch Bridge. |
1966 | The bridge for Interstate I-40 is built nearby causing US Route 66 to be mostly abandoned. |
1978 | The bridge is dismantled. |
