Rehabilitation of the Emmerich Rhine Bridge
The Emmerich Rhine Bridge carries federal highway 220 over the Rhine. The cable-stayed bridge, which is 1,144 meters long in total, was opened in 1965 and connects the two cities of Emmerich and Kleve. In 2002, it was placed under a preservation order. The steel superstructure of the river bridge is 803 m long, making it the longest suspension bridge in Germany; at 500 m, the Emmerich Rhine Bridge also has the largest span of any bridge in Germany. Its steel pylons rise 75 m into the air.
The Emmerich Rhine Bridge is subject to a high traffic load: well over 20,000 vehicles pass through it every day. Various structural inspections over the years have revealed massive damage, so that the bridge now requires extensive repair at a cost of almost 30 million euros. The rehabilitation measures of the first construction phase include the replacement of the 200 suspension cables, the renewal of the corrosion protection of the main supporting cable as well as the outer and inner surfaces of the pylons and crossbeams, and the renewal of the roadway and railings.
The Joint Venture Rheinbrücke Emmerich, consisting of the companies Tiefenbach Oberflächenschutz, Teupe & Söhne Gerüstbau GmbH, Stahlbau Raulf GmbH and R. Lange GmbH Moers, was commissioned by the NRW state road construction authority to carry out the rehabilitation work for construction phase 1.
TEUPE's share of the contract includes the complete scaffolding and enclosure of the hangers, supporting cables and bridge pylons, as well as the erection of several roadway protection roofs and the placement of elevators for passenger and load transport. The contract covers all services including the design, planning, verification, erection and dismantling of the scaffold structures including the complete technical processing as well as the preparation of the working drawings in the TEUPE technical office. Furthermore, all steel construction components required for the scaffolds and protective roofs will be manufactured in-house by TEUPE.
700 m² protective roof
Scaffolding work and site installation for the large-scale project began in January 2019. First, the support yokes required for the protective roof were erected. Subsequently, the first protective roof with an area of 700 m² was erected on the pylon on the side of the city of Emmerich within a weekend closure break. The second protective roof on the pylon on the side of the city of Kleve was erected two weeks later - despite partly adverse weather conditions. Furthermore, working and protective scaffolds were erected on the pylons, hangers and supporting cables for the renewal of the corrosion protection.
During the renovation work, traffic will be maintained on two lanes, one in each direction at all times.
General rehabilitation until summer 2023
The general renovation of the Rhine Bridge at Emmerich is expected to last until summer 2023. During the construction phase, road users on the B220 should expect slight traffic disruptions.
