Chronology
1927 | A private initiative is formed to advocate the construction of a "automobile road" from Hamburg to Basel via Frankfurt (HAFRABA). It is dismissed by the NSDAP. |

23 September 1933 | Adolf Hitler takes up the idea of the highway again and comes personally to the ground breaking ceremony for the section Frankfurt-Darmstadt. |
1934 | Construction of the highway section Frankfurt-Kassel begins which requires a Main river crossing. |
1945 | Dynamited by retreating German troops. |
22 April 1946 | Reconstructed bridge enters service. The bridge is made of wood. It is later replaced again by a reinforced concrete structure. |
22 September 1976 | The first superstructure of the replacement bridge is completed and enters service. |
December 1976 | The bridge is dismantled by barging parts of the bridge out. |
2 January 1977 | In a second barging foray the remainder of the superstructure is removed. |
15 February 1977 | Demolition is complete. |
