Formwork and scaffolding for FAIR particle accelerator in Darmstadt

The FAIR particle accelerator is currently one of the largest research projects worldwide. In the future, around 3,000 scientists will explore the secrets of the universe here by accelerating ions and antiprotons to nearly the speed of light. When the particles collide with a material sample, knowledge is gained that can be used for a wide variety of research areas.

FAIR stands for "Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research". The facility has been under construction at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt since summer 2017. Once completed, FAIR will offer unique research opportunities in the future that will allow the processes in the universe to be simulated under laboratory conditions.

1,100 m long, complex ring tunnel at a depth of 20 m

To get to the bottom of the smallest particles, the bigger you have to think and build. Some 2 million m³ of earth will be moved and more than 600,000 m³ of reinforced concrete will be shaped for this purpose. The centerpiece of the huge facility is a 1,100-meter-long ring tunnel at a depth of almost 20 meters, adjoined by several buildings and experiment stations. The three-cell tunnel is being constructed using the cut-and-cover method - with massive structural components and a complex reinforcement system: walls and ceilings are 2 m thick, and concrete shields, some up to 6 m thick, are located between the radiation, technical and supply tunnels.

At the bidding stage, a slab table solution was already designed for the tunnel slabs, which took into account the special construction sequence with a drive-through opening for moving the tables. The reduced tie points within the tunnel walls, in conjunction with a high degree of prefabrication of the wall and slab formwork elements, were also one of the reasons for awarding the contract to the Weissenhorn-based formwork and scaffolding specialist PERI.

Concreting and shoring as well as for stair access

"PERI UP Flex" is used in Darmstadt as crane-movable reinforcement and concreting scaffolding, but also as shoring and for stairway access. Stair towers with a step and platform width of 1.00 m each are used to bridge the distances of up to 20 m in height. These can be accessed comfortably and safely even with oncoming traffic and with tools or building materials.
