Abstract:

New building of the Waschmühl Viaduct - Harmonically symbiosis historical building/new building

In the course of the expansion of the federal motorway A 6 between Mannheim and Saarbrücken up to six lanes the existing Waschmühl Viaduct, classified as historic monument, has to be refurbished and widened. Therefore a new bridge shall be built next to the historic sandstone arch bridge. Due to this specific situation and the artistically importance of the Waschmühl Viaduct designed by Paul Bonatz, a design competition for the new bridge has been organized. This article reports on the results of the competition and the final design of the new bridge.
