This paper is devoted to a new field of application of cable-stayed bridges: bridges with multiple cable-stayed spans. It begins with a short historical review and a special reference to Ricardo Morandi's bridges. It then describes the very few bridges that have been built recently with multiple cable-stayed spans and the designs that have been proposed in the last thirty years. It ends with the presentation of three recent major projects, at least one of which will be built. These three projects show the extreme efficiency of this concept for crossing wide rivers and sea channels. |
