Notes
The beginning of the construction of the monument was marked by the ground breaking on July 4, 1848. Construction was halted in 1854, at a height of 150 feet, due to political events. For the centennial of the Declaration of Independence in 1876, the task to complete the structure was given to the Corps of Engineers. The foundations were redone as the monument was already leaning like the Tower of Pisa. The capstone was set in 1884 and the monument dedicated on February 21, 1885.
