Crumlin Viaduct from A472 road bridge at Low Level station : View northward, towards Crumlin (High Level), Aberdare and Neath left, Pontypool Road right: ex-GWR Pontypool Road - Neath line. (Underneath is the Newport - Ebbw Vale/Brynmawr (Western Valleys) line. Crumlin (Low Level) station and Crumlin Viaduct). The westbound empties 'perilously' high up on the 200-foot viaduct (demolished 1967), is headed by a 28XX 2-8-0 exemplifing the heavy coal traffic between the Welsh Valleys and England by this route, but which was closed on 15/6/64.

Crumlin (Low Level) station and Crumlin Viaduct : View NE, towards Aberbeeg and Ebbw Vale/Brynmawr on the ex-GW Newport - Western Valleys lines. The station and both lines closed to passengers from 30/4/62. Freight ceased on the Ebbw Fach line in 1975, but has continued to Ebbw Vale. On the restored passenger service to Ebbw Vale, commencing on 6/2/08, the nearest station is Newbridge. High up on the celebrated viaduct of the ex-GW Neath - Pontypool Road line, just east of Crumlin (High Level), is an eastbound coal train - looking very perilous.

Construction begins.

First pier is raised.

A girder slips and falls while being put in place, killing two and injuring one worker.
December 1855

Main structural works completed.
May 1857

Load testing with 6 locomotives loaded with lead. The maximum deflections were within an inch and a half.
1928

Double track is replaced by a single one due to heavier traffic loads.
1964

Railway traffic is discontinued on the line.
13 June 1964

Last passenger train passes over the bridge.

Notes

The viaduct no longer exists, but the abutments can still be seen on the valley sides.
