Leaves Italy and eventually works on the construction of a railroad line in Austria.

Arrives in France where he engages in the Foreign Legion and participates in the conquest of Algeria. At his return he opens an engineering office in Marseille.

1838

Engineer in Paris.

1843

Engineer in Aix-en-Provence.
Creation of the Société du Canal Zola: construction of the canal and dam to provide Aix-en-Provence with fresh-water.

27 March 1847

François Zola dies of pneumonia, most certainly contracted on the construction site of the Zola Dam.
