Abstract:

Analysis of the insulation effect of infrared reflective products.

Up to now there are no adequate methods to quantify the thermal resistance of IR-reflective insulation products. For air filled rooms with low-emissivity bounding surfaces, the approximation procedure of the DIN EN ISO 6946 is not suitable, because the dominating convective heat transfer processes cannot be calculated precisely enough. The Institute of Heat and Mass Transfer at RWTH Aachen University has developed a simulation procedure for the calculation of the simultaneous heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation in a fluid layer in detail for various Rayleigh number ranges with the help of Nusselt correlations to obtain quantitative predictions for the thermal resistance of different roof systems.
