Abstract:

The Kienbergwand Tunnel – An Extraordinary Solution for Pedestrians, Cyclists and Motor Vehicles

The Kienbergwand panoramic road follows Lake Mondsee on the border line between the provinces of Salzburg and Upper Austria. During the last decades there were a lot of rock falls in the area of the 400 m high nearly vertical rock face of Kienbergwand. As a result of a rock fall incidence in year 1999 the road was closed for any traffic. As this road is important for the local economy and of high interest for tourism, a final solution was searched. At last a project with separate tunnels for pedestrians/cyclists and motor vehicles was realized. Not only the outstanding solution for traffic is remarkable, but also the joint funding of this project by the provincial governments of Salzburg and Upper Austria via a PPP model executed by the Kienberg-Panoramastraße Errichtungs-GmbH.
