Abstract: |
The ultimate capacity of slender columns, frames and arches. After a short historical review the theory of stability for columns, frames and arches of structural steel is explained and applied to the posterior analysis of six large test structures. The comparison with the measured ultimate capacities shows that the assumed size of the structural deformation at collapse is of decisive importance which was insufficiently considered in the old German standard DIN 4114 (1952) as well as in the newer one DIN 18800 (1990) and in the new Eurocode EC 3 (DIN 1993-1-3 of December 2010). As the introduced collapse deformations are too small the safety predictions according to the above mentioned standards are generally big. |
