Abstract: |
Prospects for the "Red Hamburg" between preservation, retrofitting and new build.Red brick buildings form the typical Hamburg town picture. Unique and valuable cityscapes were made with red bricks and are necessary for the identity of the whole city. Fritz Schumacher and Gustav Oelsner and their historic buildings are protagonists of a modern urban structure and are representatives of several others of well-known architects. With the rising aims to reduce energy consumption and to fulfill the international CO₂-reduction targets, the fear of a radical change of the "Red Hamburg" is growing. Several streets of houses are already covered by thermal insulation without any reference to the historical roots and with little architectural ambitions. On different levels, authority, associations and individuals are getting involved to find a way to save the "Red Brick City Hamburg" for the future. |
