Abstract:

In order to meet present and future rail traffic demands in central Berlin, an extensive program of reconstruction and development is underway. In the corridor extending north and south from Potsdamer Platz, a number of large projects will be realized. This corridor lies in the war-scarred and subsequently partitioned section of central Berlin. In the area bounded by the Spree River and the Landwehrkanal, there was ample space for new construction, while other areas in the corridor needed large-scale reconstruction. The Berlin Wall ran 4 km through the northern section, which was relatively undeveloped, while the old railway lines in the southern section, terminating at the Anhalter and Potsdamer Platz railway stations, were in need of reconstruction.
