Abstract:

Load bearing behavior of chemical fasteners after installation at decreased temperatures

In the last 10 years there have been made tremendous developments to increase the fields of applications of adhesive anchor systems. Hence these systems are used for structural attachments in a wide variety of applications in concrete construction.
In order to ensure the structural reliability of adhesive anchors prequalification procedures such as ETAG 001, P. 5 in Europe or AC308 and ACI 355.4 in the USA were developed. Both procedures require reliability tests to check the behavior under deep temperature installation conditions. Whereas the American provisions require a prequalification test reflecting an installation during e.g. in winter and the subsequent heating on a sunny day the European prequalification guidelines are quiet in respect to this matter.
This paper presents results of a test program developed to demonstrate the susceptibility of adhesives used for post installed chemical anchors to decreased temperatures installations. The test results clearly indicate that the behavior of decreased temperature installation is insufficiently considered in the European and partially also in American product prequalification provisions. A proposal for a new test and its evaluation to cover the unfavorable effects of decreased installation conditions is presented. In the meantime this proposal was included to AC308.
