Abstract:

The Minaret of the Great Mosque of Algeria - A very special structure.

The minaret of the Great Mosque of Algeria will be the highest minaret in the world and Africa's highest skyscraper. The project designed by a German team of architects and engineers is under construction. The site is exposed to an extremely high seismic risk. This in conjunction with the buildings slenderness and its particular architectonical demands, have led to a composite structure with an unusual concept to withstand lateral loading. In order to ensure the necessary seismic safety of this millennium's monument the most sophisticated seismic design procedures had to be used. The paper presents the design philosophy and analyses as well as some significant structural features and details of the minaret structure.
