Abstract:

Methods for the evaluation of quality of non-destructive testing methods

To draw reliable conclusions from results gained with non-destructive testing methods in civil-engineering (NDT-CE) it is important to know about the quality of results. This paper presents a methodology for quantitative (metric) testing problems to determine the uncertainty of measurement on the basis of the Guide (Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurements - GUM). For qualitative testing problems - stating the existence of a defect or not - the well-established procedure to estimate POD parameters (Probability of Detection) according to MIL-HDBK-1823A is described. For both methodologies - GUM and POD - examples that may occur at prestressed concrete bridges are presented in the context of static calculations of existing bridges based on stochastic models.
