Abstract:

Frost damages at steel hollow sections.

Steel hollow sections are often sealed by welding. Nevertheless ice pressure can damage those cells, if intruding water begins to freeze in winter. From the analysis of five cases a general description of frost damage is derived. Recommendations of the prevention of damages with focus on the inspection of structures are given.
