Abstract:

European standards for exterior waterproofing of structures: the example of Germany and Austria.

As a rule, waterproofing in structures that are in physical contact with the ground has to be oriented towards the age of the structure in question and is among the most essential aspects of building works.
Based on many years, even decades, of experience, standardisation in Austria and Germany now provides a well-founded set of technical planning and application regulations. From the author's point of view, a number of differences do exist in certain approaches, bit no relevant discrepancies can be found regarding essential points that are decisive for the quality of execution.
The Austrian planning and procedural standard ÖNORM B7209 and the standard on works contracts (ÖNORM B2209, Part 1) include all works relevant for the field of waterproofing of buildings, and in the case of German standards, this matter is treated in DIN 18195, Parts 1 through 10.
