Abstract: The contribution of dating methods to the detection of the reuse of architectural terracotta (ATC) is examined in twenty-five buildings from the Early Middle Ages. Reuse is found to be the case when the ATC production age is found to be greater than that of construction. Thus, the reuse of Roman ATC is frequent but not systematic. The recent development of luminescence dating of mortar, directly accessing the chronology of construction, breathes new life into the study of reuse.
