Abstract:

Ground improvement by the CSV method - Recommendations - based on laboratory findings - how to estimate the degree of improvement of soil properties by dry mortar pillars

Increasingly, shallow foundations on improved ground are implemented as technical and economical alternatives to deep foundations. In order to quantify the degree of possible improvement by dehydrating dry mortar columns with the CSV method, extensive laboratory tests were performed at the University of Konstanz. The goal was to develop design recommendations for practical use enabling the analytical estimation of the degree of possible improvement. After discussing the experimental results, a simple design method is introduced using a numerical example. Besides the improvement caused by dehydration, the degree of improvement due to displacement can also be considered with a quantitative restriction. As a result, a numerical estimate of the degree of improvement is possible by solely using classical soil mechanics approaches.
