Abstract: |
The building of monasteries - we are talking here about Christian monasteries - is an unusual commission these days. In Austria in recent decades, due to the shortage of vocations in most religious orders and the extensive use of existing building substance, there has been little requirement for new buildings in this area. Some examples of monasteries and convents built in Austria after 1945 are: Kolleg St. Josef in Salzburg Aigen by Holzbauer/Kurrent/Spalt (built from 1961-64 and now no longer used as a monastery), the Ursuline convent in Innsbruck by Josef Lackner (1971-79), the Cistercian convent in Maria Roggendorf by Walter Hildebrand (1975-1980) and most recently the new Carmelite convent in Innsbruck by Margarethe Heubacher-Sentobe (2002-03). Recently a further new monastery has been built in the Pongau region of Salzburg. |
