Abstract:

The Avonmouth Bridge carries the M5 motorway over the River Avon. The steel box structure comprises twenty spans of between 30 and 174m. The structure was opened in the 1970s and subsequently strengthened towards the end of the 1990s to increase traffic capacity. The purpose of this assessment was to provide a management tool for the structure to assist with future maintenance, to enable prompt clearance of special loads to cross the bridge and to carry out an assessment of key elements of the structure in terms of strength and fatigue life.
