Abstract: |
A novel seismic retrofitting method for RC frame is proposed in this paper. In this method, the strengths of columns are increased by confining top and bottom regions of two adjacent columns through active confinement which is applied using high-strength external hoops and steel plates. The retrofitted column bottom is connected with the retrofitted top of an adjacent column using steel cross braces having friction-type super high tension bolted joints to improve global stability of the RC frame. The results of cyclic lateral load test show that, the retrofitted specimen exhibits excellent seismic performance in term of strength while the non-retrofitted one failed in shear. Numerical studies on the non-retrofitted and retrofitted specimens are carried out using OpenSees. The results from numerical models agree well with the experimental results. |
