Abstract: |
The Model Kloof Pedestrian Bridge and Walkway project is a South African National Roads SOC Ltd community development project located in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The project connects communities that previously were required to use the busy national road shoulder or cross at grade in order to reach employment and education opportunities. SANRAL and consultants RHDHV decided to use the project as the first pilot project for Greenroads in South Africa. This required the inclusion of several best-practices for design and construction from the American Greenroads Manual. Also included were best-practices contextually relevant to sustainable infrastructure development in South Africa. The local concepts were focused on job creation, skills development and road safety education which are not adequately represented in the American version. Whilst the impact of the project brought added value to stakeholders and local community, the development of a local chapter of Greenroads in South Africa is working to develop a means of knowledge sharing and project resources that allow each project to build on past successes. This ensures that sustainability concepts aren’t implemented in project-to-project silos but form part of a sustainable green industry suited for South Africa’s infrastructure growth. |
