Abstract:

Fiber-reinforced polymer composite shell or membrane placed externally around the lower bulb of a pre-stressed concrete girder can help eliminate, or significantly reduce chloride ingress, and also help to enhance its service life. The bond at the FRP composite shell and prestressed concrete interface was studied experimentally to evaluate the flexural and shear behaviour of FRP composite shell-reinforced prestressed concrete bridge girders. Simple tension specimens, consisting of prestressed concrete prisms with externally-bonded FRP composite laminates, using pre-glued aggregates to the FRP composite laminates, with five levels of prestressing (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%), were prepared and tested. These specially designed hybrid FRP composite laminates demonstrated good results for bond characteristics at the FRP composite laminate-concrete interface, and improved the strength and stiffness of the prisms. The tensile strength at initial cracking in the simple FRP-reinforced specimen was almost twice that of the control specimens.
