Chronology

16 July 1228

Saint Francis is canonized by they pope who also lays the foundation stone of the church the same day.

26 September 1997

The church is severely damaged during an earthquake. The frescoed vaults partially collapse, stones fall from the tympanum, etc.

28 November 1999

The upper church is reopened after extensive restoration works and installation of anti-seismic devices.
