16 July 1228 | Saint Francis is canonized by they pope who also lays the foundation stone of the church the same day. |

26 September 1997 | The church is severely damaged during an earthquake. The frescoed vaults partially collapse, stones fall from the tympanum, etc. |
28 November 1999 | The upper church is reopened after extensive restoration works and installation of anti-seismic devices. |
