Abstract:

Quality control for crack repair: a new approach using ultrasonic imaging

If cracks in concrete elements are repaired by filling them with epoxy, polyurethane or a cement based filler, there are three criteria for the repair quality: there should be a non-positive connection between the crack's edges, the repaired crack should be watertight, and it should be completely filled. While the first two criteria can easily be verified, to date the only way to get information about the completeness of the filling has been to drill cores. By applying advanced ultrasonic imaging techniques, significant differences between empty, partially filled and completely filled cracks can be observed for epoxy or cement based fillers.
