Abstract:

The application of folded plate principles in architecture and civil engineering.

Folding and corrugation represent an efficient construction principle. Until now its potential has been scarcely exploited in architecture and engineering. Folding systems combine both spatial development and load transfer together. Moreover they can be rigid and unmoving or kinematic. Numeric computer processes and parametric constructions allow the design of various folding layouts as well as the description of movements of kinematic folding. This design tool establishes the technical basics for the implementation of this building and construction principle, which was originally found in nature.
