Abstract:

Adaptive bridges using modular strengthening strategies "Adaptive tube-in-tube bridges"

Bridges are usually designed for an 80 to 100 year design life. Due to a variety of constraints a detailed prediction of traffic growth and future requirements on infrastructure is hardly possible for this period. Therefore, alternative concepts are being developed for future bridges where the bridge can react flexible on varying boundary conditions. It is the main idea to add a modular system of secondary structures (e. g. struts, trusses) to the primary system (e. g. box girder) under the premise of minimizing the impact on traffic. Within a research project the basic requirements of an adaptive bridge design are explained and a modular strengthening concept is developed. The proposed adaption concepts are studied in detail using a typical box girder bridge.
