Tower in hybrid construction
The Zabelstein is located in the Steigerwald (480m above sea level, district of Schweinfurt in Lower Franconia). The new observation tower with a total height of 19.50m was planned on a regular 6-cornered ground plan, just like the old tower that had fallen into disrepair. Thus, the existing foundation could be further used.
The exterior columns on the six corner points are designed as curved glulam beams. The cross beams between the columns as well as the stiffening diagonals consist of slender steel cross sections. The bending of the columns creates a widening at the tower head. This is where the viewing plateau is located.
The supports are enclosed by shingling. This protects the wood with all connection points from moisture. The horizontal components as well as the stairs are made of galvanized steel.
