After having spent more than one million dollars on the construction of the tunnel, the State of South Carolina abandons construction with 4 363 ft of the planned 5 863 ft having been excavated.

1950s — 1970s

Clemson University uses the tunnel to grow blue cheese. The operation is later moved to air-conditioned ripening rooms which duplicate the tunnel's climate.
