Chronology
1990 — 1991 | Bridge is assessed and deemed to require strengthening. A 7.5 ton weight restriction is imposed until these works are completed. |

March 2001 | A Partnering Contract between Devon County Council and South West Highways for £3 million is let for the work. The Scheme is funded by Devon County Council from its Local Transport Plan. |

Notes
The strengthening works designed by Devon County Council's Engineering Design Group required the removal of the existing concrete edge slab and parapets and driving new tubular steel piles to support new wider combined footways and bike paths with parapets on both sides of the deck. One of the piles was driven in advance of the main Contract, and confirmed that, using appropriate methods, the piles could be installed without damage to the existing structure. The new superstructure construction is a reinforced concrete slab composite with steel plate girders supported on tubular steel columns that are a continuation of the new piles. Other works include extensive concrete and steelwork repairs and waterproofing and resurfacing to the existing bridge superstructure, refurbishment of the lifting span, and widening a short length of the Teignmouth causeway adjacent to the lifting span. Construction of a retaining wall to support the carriageway at the Teignmouth end of the bridge was also required. The design concept was largely governed by the need to keep traffic disruption to a minimum, particularly during the summer.
