Chronology
20 December 2008 | The original Southern Star wheel opens to the public. |
---|---|
30 January 2009 | After only 40 days of operation the wheel is closed again after up to three-meter long cracks were discovered during lighting installation. A total of fourteen cracks are then found in the structure and the cause is finally determined to be a design flaw. The original wheel structure is then dismantled and sold for scrap while the support structure and gondolas are kept. |
23 December 2013 | The attraction, renamed Melbourne Star, is re-opened after a lengthy phase of re-design and re-building of the wheel. |
