4 July 1795 | The cornerstone is laid by Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. |

11 January 1798 | The original building is completed. |
1802 | The dome is sheathed in copper to prevent water leakage. |
1872 | The dome is gilded with 23-carat gold. |
1895 | The House of Representatives' oval chamber is added behind the original building. The meeting chamber used until then under Bulfinch's dome becomes the Senate Chamber. |
1917 | The Wings of the State House are added on the left and right of the original building. |
1990 | The Great Hall is added behind the House of Representatives. |
Notes
The Massachusetts State House has served as model for the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., and as inspiration for many of the other state capitols built subsequently.
