Widening and Pier Head Strengthening Project
In order to widen the deck of the La Jarosa Viaduct to conform to current motorway norms, the piers needed to be strengthened as well as the concrete in the pier heads had dangerous levels of corrosion which would have been worsened by adding more live loads. To remove bending action on the existing pier heads, new hammerhead slabs were added to either face of the existing ones connected by diaphragms from above within the width of the pier shafts, creating only compression on the existing pier heads.
The widening included the complete removal of the existing deck slab. Out of the existing six evenly spaced precast girders, only the inner four ones were retained. The outer girders were removed and replaced by new precast girders placed further out to accommodate the larger width. Using precast slabs as formwork, an entirely new deck slab was then cast on top of all the girders.
