The King Tower was the tallest structure in Shanghai until the completion of the Jin Mao Tower. It also held the title for tallest building in China for a few months but was surpassed by Shun Hing Square in Shenzhen in the same year.

The tower was the tallest in China until Shun Hing Square in Shenzhen was built later in the same year. It was the tallest building in Shanghai until the Jin Mao Tower's completion in 1998.
