Chronology

10 August 1966, 15:27

During the pour of about 2000 tons of concrete for the eastern side of the southern bridge the wooden falsework fails and collapses. Nine workers are killed.

November 1966

In an inquest the cause of the collapse is determined to be faulty design of the falsework which lacked diagonals as well as the use of green instead of matured wood which lacked the necessary bearing capacity. Both the contractor and engineer are given responsibility for the failure.
