Chronology
14 April 1908, 14:30 | Part of the masonry footings of the dam start to fail under the water pressure. The dam starts leaking silt-heavy water near the powerhouse. An employee notices the problem and has the powerhouse evacuated. About 15 minutes laster the footings give way, causing a settlement and 9.1 meter wide breach to open in the dam. The surging water further undermines the footings and within half an hour a 91 meter wide section of the dam's steel structure is swept away suddenly. The failure causes the water to surge downstream in a wave 7.6 to 9.1 m high. The water rushing down the MIssouri causes more than one million dollars in damage downstream though messages warning of the impending catastrophy via telephone and telegram prevent any loss of life. |
