Notes

A National Historic Landmark, Fort Warren guards Boston Harbor and was used as a prison for Confederate prisoners during the American Civil War. It is the single most important Civil War site in New England due to the famous prisoners kept at the fort. Famous prisoners include: James M. Mason and John Slidell, the Confederate diplomats involved in the Trent affair, Confederate Vice President Alexander H. Stephens, and Confederate Postmaster General John Henninger Reagan.
