Chronology
4 September 2010 | The 2010 Canterbury earthquake does not cause major damage to the cathedral but the decision is taken afterwards to close the church pending retrofitting and strengthening measures. |
---|---|
22 February 2011 | During the 2011 Christchurch earthquake the building suffers significant structural damage. Both front bell towers collapse with debris causing major damage to the front façade and parked vehicles. Major cracking occurs around the base of the dome. Workers repairing damage from the previous earthquake and a custodian manage to escape the building. |
2 March 2011 | The bishop decides to have the dome demolished after inspections reveal that it could collapse during another earthquake. |
26 July 2011 | Removal of the outer copper dome followed by the interior dome in August even though it had not collapsed in the June 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Demolition of the entire rear of the cathedral follows in October. |
