2000 | Work on the bridge is put on hold after UNESCO warns that the site's world heritage status would be threatened if the bridge were built. |

October 2008 | Bridge construction resumes. Independent inspectors however found beforehand that the post-tensioning used for the cable-stays had rusted during the construction stoppage. At the exposed anchorages the wedges were also rusted so that the contractor was warned that construction could only go ahead if the cables were replaced and the deck structure propped up while doing so. |
January 2009 | The bridge deck collapses after a tower fails under uneven loading. |
