Impressive architecture: German Football Museum in Dortmund

The German Football Museum, opened at the end of 2015, is located at a prime site across from Dortmund's main station and is embedded in the city's art and culture district. Reflecting the leitmotif of the exhibition "We are football", architects HPP Hentrich-Petschnigg & Partner have raised an impressive monument to the legend of the game. The stage: the spacious museum forecourt which provides an elegant transition between the different levels and successfully connects the museum with the surrounding cityscape. Balustrades made of X-TEND stainless steel mesh by Carl Stahl Architecture delimit the plateaus and provide protection for visitors when moving between levels. Hardly noticeable in its lightness and transparency, the stainless steel mesh seamlessly blends into the architecture, leaving the building the space it needs to unfold. The museum rises up as a box in the middle of the square and is wedge-shaped on the east and west sides – highly visible with its LED façade which, with its different cycles, offers an initial hint of the exhibition experience within. Pulses of light shoot in the direction of the entrance and accompany the visitors into the foyer.

Well-thought-out

Inside, visitors will enjoy an experience-oriented exhibition with a dramatic concept that always focuses on the game: from "Before the match" through the "First Half" and "Half Time" to the "Second Half" and what happens in "Extra Time". The five areas of the exhibition show the entire diversity of the game, also focusing on its significance as a social, cultural and economic factor.

Technically innovative as well as classic forms of presentation showcase football's past and present. Highlights of the tour are a multiple projection show on the history of the Bundesliga and the German national team, the vault with the most valuable trophies, as well as the Hall of Fame.

Multi-purpose museum

The German Football Museum in Dortmund is not just a place to remember football glory: It is a genuine forum for meeting and discussing for all members of the football family, clubs, associations and fans, partners and sponsors. This is promoted in the multi-purpose arena on the lower level with its café and event area – the perfect place to sit and relax after an absorbing visit to the exhibition. On an area of around 700 m², guests have the opportunity to get involved on the pitch themselves or view the special exhibition housed here. The space can be used for all kinds of different events, including press conferences, exhibition matches and galas. It has a capacity of 500. Seating is provided in the form of a stylized football stand that rises like a staircase. Visitors and guests have an excellent view of what is going on in the arena from a gallery. And this is where the national team's bus stands. Protection is provided by delicate balustrade made of stainless steel mesh. It reflects the architectural concept with its transparency, functionality and dynamism.

The museum shop offers fans a whole range of memorabilia, shirts and souvenirs. A unique light construction made of aluminium showcases the articles – it appears to be floating, but is in fact held by filigree stainless steel cables.
