HafenCity in Hamburg: An architectural concept becomes reality

Lindapter's new Hollo-Bolt® Flush Fit has been used as a load-bearing connection within a hollow section substructure at the Brooktorkaiquartier in Hamburg's HafenCity district, where it secures a long span glass roof and multi-storey window frontage without the fasteners being visible. The innovative Hollo-Bolt® Flush Fit is concealed within the hollow sections without a protruding bolt head or nut, ensuring that the structure remains true to the award-winning design by GMP (Gerkan, Marg and Partners)

.

The architectural firm GMP designed the Brooktorkaiquartier with clinker brick facades as a reference to the historic buildings of the Speicherstadt across the street, combining them with the clean, modern lines of large, glazed open spaces. The modern glazing of the Germanischer Lloyd building provides sweeping views over the old Speicherstadt and creates an impressive entrance to the company's new headquarters. The Lindapter M12 Hollo-Bolt® Flush Fit was used to connect the individual components of the glazing's supporting frame. To connect the individual components, they were pre-drilled during prefabrication, small pipe ends were welded onto the columns or girders and connected to the crossbars in a load-bearing manner using the HBFF according to the telescopic principle. The Hollo-Bolt is quickly installed by simply inserting it into the hole and tightening it with a torque wrench. Only the Hollo-Bolt® Flush Fit requires a mounting nut (supplied) for installation. The cost-effective solution required no additional special tools or specially trained craftsmen and resulted in significantly less work at height than traditional welding or through-bolting methods. The finished steel framework not only meets structural requirements, but is also aesthetically pleasing and has a clear uniform appearance. Lindapter's latest innovation, the Hollo-Bolt® Flush Fit combines the technical advantages of the familiar Hollo-Bolt with the aesthetic benefits of an inconspicuous connection. As a load-bearing steel beam connection, the Hollo-Bolt is the only hollow section fastener listed in the SCI and BCSA joint publication "Joints in Steel Construction - Simple Connections." Typical applications include load-bearing hollow section steel structures, cladding, balconies and stairs.
