Fort Denison in Sydney Harbour with the naval dockyards of Garden Island in the background
Fort Denison, also known as Pinchgut, was constructed on the site of a small island (known as Mat-te-wan-ye to the loacal aboriginal population) in 1857 as a defence against possible attack from France and America. Prior to this it had also been used as a place of confinement for convicts as punishment for offences.
