Moose Run Bridge Replacement
Moose Run Bridges Client: Swalling Construction Owner: U.S Air Force, Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage, AK PND Engineers, Inc. designed a replacement for a heavily trafficked pedestrian bridge that was damaged beyond repair during flooding in the spring of 2012. The bridge is situated on the Moose Run Golf Course, which is owned, operated, and maintained by Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. The superstructure for the 200-foot-long single span bridge would typically be a heavy through-truss or heavy girder. However, construction of this type of bridge would require mobilizing a large crane to set the superstructure, adding considerable cost to the project. Instead, this bridge, as well as its predecessor, was designed as a Strand Bridge®. This patented design, developed by PND in partnership with Swalling Construction, uses less steel than conventional structures, significantly reducing the cost of the bridge. In addition, the method of lofting the bridge allows the use of smaller construction equipment, further reducing cost.
