Abstract:

Design of large Natural Draft Cooling Towers

Cheap energy forms the basis of the wealth of industrial nations. Cheap energy will be generated presently and in near future in thermal power plants up to 1.2 GW of power, working on basis of coal or nuclear fuel. Such power plants require large natural draft cooling towers for re-condensation of their working medium steam, to avoid thermal poisoning of natural waters. The present manuscript describes these largest shell structures made of reinforced concrete, it details, from multiple problems during design and construction, the safety proofs of shell stability, and their often complicated foundations.
